Lopez, a 42-year-old Hockley teacher and father, is now officially a Carnegie Medal hero after tackling and disarming a gunman who opened fire at a Pasadena high school band competition on Feb. 1. Lopez had gone to the event with his family to help his father-in-law and ended up sprinting toward danger as the shooter moved down a hallway. He brought the man to the ground, held on until others could wrestle away the gun and stayed there until officers arrived. The wounded man was taken to a hospital, and Lopez walked away with only minor knee pain. The Carnegie Medal is reserved for civilians who put their own lives on the line to save others.
The Carnegie Hero Fund Commission named Lopez one of 17 medal recipients this year, detailing how he "jumped up, grasped the assailant from behind, and tackled him to the floor" before other bystanders joined in, according to the Carnegie Hero Fund Commission. The commission noted that Lopez kept the attacker pinned until others secured the weapon and police could take the suspect into custody. Founded by Andrew Carnegie in 1904, the fund provides the Carnegie Medal and a financial grant to civilians who step into extreme danger to protect someone else.
How Lopez Stopped The Shooter
Local coverage reported that Lopez had been guiding his father-in-law toward some steps when the gunman came into view. Lopez immediately got up, tackled the man and fought for control of the firearm while shouting for help, Click2Houston reported. Witnesses said other adults and school staff quickly jumped in, helping Lopez restrain the suspect until Pasadena officers reached the hallway and secured the scene. The chaos erupted during a Texas Color Guard Circuit event that had filled the auditorium with students, bands and families.
Suspect, Charges And Aftermath
Authorities identified the suspect as 83-year-old Dennis Brandl Jr., who investigators say drove from his Spring home to the school and opened fire, hitting a percussion consultant, Houston Chronicle reporters noted. Brandl was charged with aggravated assault with a deadly weapon; officials later said he died after a medical emergency while in custody, and the charge was dismissed, according to FOX 26 Houston.

The Carnegie Hero Fund stated that Lopez is one of 17 people recognized in this round of awards and that the medal has gone to civilians across the United States and Canada since 1904, with more than 10,500 recipients so far, according to the Carnegie Hero Fund Commission. Each case is reviewed in detail before a decision is made, and honorees typically receive both a medal and a financial grant to support them or their families.
School and district officials publicly praised Lopez and the other adults who intervened. Lopez "sustained only minor knee pain and did not require medical treatment," Click2Houston reported. Pasadena and Pearland leaders said counselors and additional support were made available after the shooting, and community figures have since hailed the bystanders whose actions likely prevented far more serious injuries.
