Honolulu is expected to have mostly clear skies and favorable conditions for outdoor New Year celebrations as a trough from a dissipated cold front moves away, allowing trade winds to return. A few passing showers may occur, but overall, beach-friendly weather is expected across the islands, according to the National Weather Service.
Winds will shift from east-southeast to easterly, which could briefly bring clouds and showers to windward areas. Aviation should remain mostly smooth, though pilots should watch for possible AIRMET Sierra alerts due to temporary mountain obscurations, as reported by the National Weather Service.
Moderate to strong easterly trade winds will continue through the week, with a Small Craft Advisory in effect for waters around Maui County and the Big Island until Wednesday afternoon. Advisory-level northwest and north-northwest swells are affecting Niihau, Kauai, Oahu, Molokai, and Maui. A cold front may bring showers from Thursday night through early Saturday, with drier conditions returning Sunday. Steady trade winds are expected on New Year’s Eve, as stated by the National Weather Service.
