The streets of Northwest Houston became an alarming battleground earlier this month when Houston Police Department officers engaged in the intense shootout with a wanted suspect. As the Houston Police chased 33-year-old Jacques Otu Bassey, the situation rapidly escalated from a routine attempt to serve a felony arrest warrant to a high-speed chase and exchange of gunfire, as seen in body camera footage recently released by authorities, according to Fox26 Houston.
Bassey, who had a felony warrant out for his arrest, was subsequently charged with two counts of attempted capital murder of a police officer and evading arrest with a motor vehicle. The chase began on December 4 and came to a perilous end near West 34th Street, Fox26 Houston reports. After flipping his vehicle, Bassey fled on foot and took cover behind a truck in a nearby parking lot, where the shootout took place.
Body camera footage captured the tense moments as officers yelled commands at the suspect. "Hey, I’ve got him over here. Put the gun down! Son of a! He just shot at me, he just shot at me!” one officer can be heard in the audio obtained by KHOU. Moments later, after an officer-involved shooting that resulted in Bassey being shot in the face, police were able to finally declare, "Hey, cease fire! Cease fire! Suspect's down."
The confrontation was documented not only by body cameras but also surveillance footage, displaying a more extensive view of the event, including Bassey firing at officers before being shot. After the harrowing incident, Bassey was transported to the hospital, where he was last listed in stable condition. The two officers involved in the shooting incident were fortunately not injured, and the investigation into the matter remains ongoing as of the latest reports from Fox26 Houston and KHOU.
