A southeast Houston homeowner was injured early Tuesday after two men tried to break into his house. A brief gunfight followed, leaving one suspect wounded and the other fleeing. The homeowner drove himself to Houston Fire Department Station 23, where he received help and was later taken to a hospital in stable condition. Police later found the injured suspect nearby.
According to KHOU, the confrontation kicked off just after 1:20 a.m. when two males approached a home in the 9400 block of East Avenue J near Galena Park and exchanged gunfire with the resident. Investigators with HPD are treating the case as an attempted home invasion.
The homeowner, who was hit at least once, managed to reach Houston Fire Department Station 23, where first responders found him and took his statement before he was transported to a local hospital. The wounded suspect was also taken to an area hospital, and both men were reported to be in stable condition, as per FOX 26 Houston.
Officers later tracked down one suspect about two blocks away on Avenue L after he reportedly knocked on a neighbor's door looking for help. Responding officers noticed he had multiple gunshot wounds and took him into custody. The second suspect managed to get away and remained the target of an active search, Click2Houston reported.
Police search and tips
HPD's Robbery Division is leading the case and has asked anyone with information to contact the department or call Crime Stoppers at 713-222-TIPS. Detectives say the second suspect may have left the area in a vehicle and are urging anyone with security video or tips to reach out to investigators.
Investigative note
Because shots were fired on both sides, detectives will lean on witness statements, surveillance footage and physical evidence before any charging decisions are made. HPD's Robbery Division will work with the Harris County District Attorney's Office to determine whether charges are filed once the investigation is complete.
