Early Friday morning, a driver was fatally shot by Houston police during an investigation after a woman reported a potential crash and a confrontation in the parking lot of an apartment complex on Cityscape Avenue. The woman had called 911, believing her car may have been hit by the driver, who reportedly brandished a firearm when she went outside to assess any damage, as indicated in reports from KHOU.
Upon arriving at the scene, Houston police discovered the SUV with hazard lights flashed and when the officers tried to engage with the man, the situation escalated quickly and, as the officers gave commands it's reported by CW39 that he brandished his weapon, which led to police discharging their firearms and ultimately the driver, a man in his 50s was pronounced dead on the spot after three officers opened fire, hitting the driver.
The Houston Police Department has clarified that the initial investigation did not show signs of a crash as initially reported by the woman, according to KHOU. In addition, police stated that multiple weapons were found in the man’s vehicle, yet no officers were reported injured in the confrontation.
The incident is currently under the scrutiny of the Harris County District Attorney's Office for investigation, during which the three involved officers have been placed on administrative leave, which according to CW39, is standard procedure in such cases, and each officer had been with the Houston Police Department for around two years, the shooting raises questions that only a thorough investigation could answer because details remain unclear whether the driver indeed fired his weapon at the officers or not.
