Houston police are investigating a fatal incident last Friday at 1500 East Crosstimbers Street, where a man died from a self-inflicted gunshot during a reported family disturbance. Officers were called after the man allegedly threatened self-harm with a handgun, and his identity is pending notification of next of kin by the Harris County Institute of Forensic Sciences, according to the City of Houston.
During the encounter, Officer G. Zimmerman, who joined HPD in January 2024, discharged his weapon while the man simultaneously shot himself, and Zimmerman was unharmed. The investigation is being handled by HPD’s Special Investigations Unit, Internal Affairs Division, and the Harris County District Attorney’s Office, with an autopsy expected to confirm the official cause of death, as reported by the City of Houston.
Houston police said "Officers responded to a responded to a family disturbance where they were told the male had produced a handgun to a family member and had expressed his intent to hurt himself," as stated by the City of Houston. The man died after an officer fired a service weapon. Detectives M. Althaus and J. Jorsch from the HPD Homicide Division are investigating the incident.
