An unresolved issue in immigration proceedings has resulted in the detention of Allan Michael Dabrio, a Cayman Islands native who has lived in the United States for more than ten years. According to PIX11, Dabrio was taken into custody by U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) after a family-based green card application was denied, leaving his husband, Matthew Marrero, facing the sudden change in their circumstances.

The green card hearing, held at ICE headquarters at 26 Federal Plaza, was expected to follow standard procedures for the couple, who have been married for two years. During the process, it was discovered that Dabrio had missed an immigration court hearing in December 2022, of which he was reportedly unaware, resulting in his detention. Matthew Marrero told ABC7NY that his husband has consistently maintained his immigration paperwork and fulfilled all related obligations, including paying fees and taxes.

Matthew Marrero has been visiting Dabrio at Newark’s Delaney Hall and described the conditions at the detention center to ABC7NY. He highlighted the challenges faced by families and individuals waiting outside to see their loved ones. The timing of Dabrio’s detention, immediately following a routine appointment and due to a missed notice, has prompted questions regarding the procedures that are supposed to ensure protection and due process within the immigration system.

Assistant Secretary Tricia McLaughlin issued a statement noting that Dabrio “received full due process.” The statement, which also provided details on Dabrio’s immigration history, reads: “ICE arrested Allan Michael Dabrio, an illegal alien from the Cayman Islands, on November 24. He entered the United States on a tourist visa that required him to depart the United States by September 8, 2013. After he failed to show up for his immigration hearing, a judge ordered him a final order of removal in 2022,” as reported by ABC7NY.

The couple’s church, Middle Collegiate Church, and their community have offered support, including creating a GoFundMe page to provide assistance. The response highlights their connection to the community and the consequences of Dabrio’s potential removal. Dabrio has been granted a stay, temporarily pausing deportation, ABC7NY reports.
