An hourslong manhunt concluded with the capture of a Bahamian fugitive following a high-speed chase that morphed into an on-foot pursuit through Florida's St. Johns County. St. Johns County Sheriff's Office (SJSO) announced via social media that their Task Force deputies, alongside Jacksonville Sheriff's Office K9 teams and air support, apprehended Tomal Rico Bowe, a 33-year-old man listed as an "armed and dangerous" INTERPOL fugitive with warrants for Aggravated Robbery out of the Bahamas, and additional warrants from Broward County for Possession of Meth and Resisting Law Enforcement.
The dramatic sequence of events began around 3:45 p.m. on December 4 when SJSO deputies attempted to pull Bowe over on Interstate 95, what ensued was a convoluted escape effort that saw him driving in the wrong direction, the theft of a vehicle, and a venture into difficult terrain. According to the official SJSO Facebook post, after the initial escape attempt was thwarted by a PIT maneuver, Bowe fled on foot across the interstate, commandeered a vehicle from a nearby business complex but had to abandon it due to the strategic deployment of stop sticks by pursuing deputies.
The chase then continued on foot into a wooded area, marshlands, and finally onto the railroad tracks where Bowe's apparently futile escape came to an end. The SJSO Air Unit played a crucial role, maintaining visual contact and directing ground units towards the fugitive. The pursuit ultimately concluded with what law enforcement described as a "K9 engagement" that led to Bowe's capture.
Bowe is facing local charges including Fleeing and Eluding Law Enforcement, Resisting Law Enforcement, Grand Theft Motor Vehicle, and Possession of Marijuana. According to the SJSO, multiple agencies worked together to track and arrest Bowe after he attempted to evade law enforcement.
