An investigation is underway by detectives from the Robbery/Homicide Unit into the death of Matthew Marchione, age 56, while in custody at the Pinellas County Jail. Information from the Pinellas County Sheriff's Office states that Marchione's death, which occurred on Wednesday, does not presently appear to be the result of suspicious circumstances.

Having been charged with a single count of Simple Battery by the Pinellas Park Police Department, Marchione was brought into the jail system on November 16, according to officials. It was in the evening hours of his demise that detectives surmise Marchione having not been involved in any altercations while detained, began showing signs of distress following a self-injury.

Details provided by the sheriff's office indicate that Marchione was found with a self-inflicted laceration above his right eyebrow at approximately 5:07 p.m. on the day of his death. After being sent to the hospital for evaluation and upon his return to the jail around 10:13 p.m., medical and detention staff executed life-saving measures upon his becoming unresponsive, but he was pronounced deceased at 11:01 p.m.
