A man's body was found in the median of the Fairfax County Parkway, near Old Plains Road in the Navy area, prompting an investigation and road closures. FOX 5 DC reported that the man was pronounced dead on the scene after being discovered around 10:30 a.m. on Tuesday. As a result, Fairfax County Parkway was closed in both directions at the intersection to facilitate the investigation.
According to WJLA, community members driving nearby spotted, the body around 9:45 a.m. and reported it to the authorities. The man, believed to be in his 50s, was found lying in the grassy median. Detectives are exploring several possibilities, including whether the individual could have been struck by a vehicle. No identification of the deceased has been confirmed as of yet.
Further details provided by the FFXnow disclose that the man showed "visible trauma to his body." Fairfax County Police Department Capt. Jesse Katzman, in a briefing said, "We're not sure how that trauma occurred or how that individual ended up in that location he is," emphasizing the odd circumstances surrounding the body's position in a low point of the grassy median, which made it difficult to spot. The road remained closed between Rugby Road and Stringfellow Road past noon as police conducted their investigation.
While the lack of nearby properties or intersections with stoplights and traffic cameras complicates the search for video evidence, detectives are reaching out to residents in nearby neighborhoods. "Anybody who lives in this area or travels this area frequently, if you know anything about what may have occurred, please contact us, and hopefully we’ll have some updates soon that we can share with the community," Katzman told FFXnow. The medical examiner is set to determine the cause and time of death, as police consider the possibility that the man may have been hit by a passing driver.
