An officer-involved shooting that took place in Balboa Park is currently under the scrutiny of the San Diego County Sheriff’s Office Homicide Unit. The incident occurred yesterday, involving San Diego Police Department officers and an adult male on a bicycle at about 4:00 PM on the 2900 block of Balboa Drive, as reported by the San Diego County Sheriff's Office.
According to the official statement, the man evaded police after being approached, leading to a chase that transitioned from his bicycle to foot through the park and onto the nearby hillside. The situation escalated when the suspect allegedly fired a round at the pursuing officers. In response, an officer discharged their weapon multiple times, hitting the suspect. Despite the chaotic scene, no officers sustained injuries.
The suspect, who suffered serious but non-life-threatening injuries, was quickly tended to by the officers before being transported to a local hospital. A firearm was recovered from the scene, which could contribute to the pending criminal charges against the individual involved.
Detailed investigations into such officer-involved shootings are standard procedure. The motivation and circumstances behind this incident are still being assessed by detectives who are "currently gathering evidence, interviewing witnesses, and examining the circumstances surrounding the shooting," the San Diego County Sheriff's Office explained. Following the Homicide Unit's investigation, the District Attorney’s Office will review for potential criminal liability regarding the officer's actions. This phase of the investigation will also include an administrative review by the San Diego Police Department to evaluate the discharge of the officer's weapon.
