North Carolina Governor Josh Stein has appointed Jeffrey Smythe as the new Secretary of Public Safety, announcing the change in leadership today. Smythe, who previously held the position as Burlington Chief of Police and Director of the North Carolina Criminal Justice Education and Training Standards Division, is set to succeed retiring Secretary Eddie Buffaloe. According to a recent press release, Governor Stein expressed his confidence in Smythe's extensive background in law enforcement and public safety.
Speaking on the appointment, Governor Stein remarked, "I am excited to announce the appointment of Jeffrey Smythe as the new Secretary of Public Safety," as mentioned on the Office of the Governor website. Smythe's track record includes serving as police chief in Burlington where he championed initiatives aimed at addressing officer wellness, implicit bias, and increasing de-escalation techniques. Governor Stein is certain that Smythe has the right experience to effectively take over the position, further emphasizing that he has seen what a great leader and dedicated public servant Jeff is.
Jeffrey Smythe began his career in law enforcement with the Arizona State University Police Department in Tempe, Arizona. A Philadelphia native, Smythe holds an undergraduate degree from Arizona State University and a master's degree from Northern Arizona University. He is also an alumnus of leadership development programs at both the Northwestern University School of Police Staff and Command and the FBI National Academy. Smythe is credited to have implemented several progressive initiatives focusing on law enforcement preparedness and mental health.
"Secretary Buffaloe is leaving big shoes to fill, and I’m ready to build on his work to keep people safe across North Carolina," Smythe told the press in a statement that not only reflects appreciation for his predecessor's work but also a commitment to continue improving the public safety apparatus within the state, as per the Office of the Governor website. Eddie Buffaloe, praised for his dedicated career in public service, will join the Raleigh Police Department as its new Deputy Chief for the Administrative Services Division after his retirement on December 31. Smythe is to officially take over the secretary role on January 1.
In his statement, outgoing Secretary Buffaloe expressed his honor in serving as the Secretary of Public Safety for North Carolina and voiced confidence in Smythe's capabilities. He remains grateful for his team, fellow Cabinet secretaries, and the leadership of both Governor Cooper and Governor Stein. Buffaloe noted on the Office of the Governor, "Jeff Smythe has done great work within the Justice Department and the City of Burlington, and I look forward to seeing his work keeping North Carolinians safe."
