As the holiday season rolls in, the Kannapolis Christmas Parade gears up for another year of festive celebration. Scheduled next Saturday at 6 p.m., the liveliness and glow of Christmas lights will illuminate downtown Kannapolis. This longstanding nighttime event, cited as one of North Carolina's oldest, sets the scene for a night filled with more than a hundred parade entries and the harmonious presence of numerous marching bands. The parade promises to present a dazzling holiday tradition for residents and visitors. KannapolisNC.gov reports that attendees are welcomed to bring their own chairs or blankets to view the parade against the scenic backdrop of the North Carolina Research Campus, Kannapolis City Hall & Police Headquarters, and West Avenue.
In honor of dedicating 24 years in public service to Kannapolis, former Mayor Darrell Hinnant will act as the Grand Marshal. He has served not only as a council member since 2001 but also assumed the mantle of mayor in 2013, making history as the city's longest-serving mayor. "Hinnant was awarded the Order of the Long Leaf Pine, North Carolina’s highest public service award by Governor James Martin," a recognition accompanied by an impressive professional career that spans across teaching and executive roles in various national entities.
The parade will start at the intersection of Main Street and Laureate Way, proceeding along Laureate Way, with a turn at West Avenue near the Gem Theatre, marching towards a culmination at Vance Street. Participants and spectators alike will experience the parade in the vibrant heart of Kannapolis, where festive decor and Christmas spirit are ample. Cash prizes, as highlighted by KannapolisNC.gov, await those who excel in categories such as bands, churches, civic organizations, and schools, which all contribute to the event's competitive zest.
The festivities don't end with the last float. Parade-goers are encouraged to extend their evening festivities at downtown businesses, many staying open for the occasion, alongside a holiday model train display at the Swanee Theatre. Afterward, the Celebration of Lights and Winterland Express at Village Park, further details of which can be found on the city's website, will provide an enchanting continuation of the evening's holiday cheer.
