Earlier today, the Los Angeles Fire Department conducted a meticulous rescue operation after a person was reported trapped in a drainage tunnel near the Corbin St bridge in Winnetka. The individual was found after an extensive search from ground and air resources that lasted over an hour. According to an LAFD alert, firefighters prepared to execute a very technical rescue, establishing a two-line rope system with a high-point off the Heavy Rescue boom.
The drainage pipe, leading to the river, necessitated a backup from all downstream rescue companies throughout the duration of the operation to ensure safety. While searching, two other individuals were located in the area, but were not in distress and were safely moved out. Firefighters were eventually able to get a ground ladder down through a vault opening, and the adult male patient self-extricated, climbing up the ladder to dry ground," as detailed in an update from the department.
Once on dry ground, the rescued individual was evaluated by firefighter/paramedics. The operation concluded successfully with no injuries reported. The response teams then proceeded to recover their equipment, making crews available for further service. The entire incident unfolded at 6450 N Corbin Av and engaged multiple resources, including helicopters and specialized urban rescue units.
The swift and effective response from the LAFD showcases the department's readiness to quickly adapt and efficiently manage complex rescue situations. The coordination among the various units ensured that the rescue was performed not only effectively but also securely, with comprehensive safety measures in place. Crews involved in the operation will conduct a thorough review of the incident to learn and further enhance their rescue protocols.
