Through the hum of holiday melodies and the glow of festive lights, a chorus of sirens blended in to herald a special shopping event — not one of consumerist frenzy, but of community solidarity. On a Saturday evening, law enforcement officials from across Lake County, including the likes of Deputy Sheriffs and Explorers, gathered not for patrol or enforcement, but for a program known as Shop with a COP. "It was a great night!" exclaimed Lake County Sheriff's Office Sheriff Frank Leonbruno in a social media post.
The event, which took place in Madison, was an orchestrated effort to foster positive interactions between local youth and law enforcement officers. Children hailing from Fairport Harbor, Madison, and Perry Local Schools had the chance to meet officers at Madison Plaza – before, with lights and sirens activated, they were transported to their shopping destination: Walmart Supercenter–Madison. Organized by the ESC of the Western Reserve, this marked the fourth year of the outreach effort, which, while announced with fanfare, one could argue, aimed at quiet impact.
The partnership between the law enforcement community and Walmart Supercenter–Madison allowed each participating child to shop alongside an officer, armed with a $100 gift card furnished by a grant from the Walmart Foundation. The night, however, began with something perhaps more nourishing than toys and gadgets — a meal shared among families and officers, a prelude to the shopping that would weave new threads of connection in the social fabric.
Gratitude was expressed not just to the officers who took part in the event, but also to the civilians who played pivotal roles. Lake County Sheriff's Office Sheriff Frank Leonbruno gave special thanks to "Stacey, the Walmart Store Manager, Walmart associates, and Kristin Llewelyn, Family and Community Liaison" for their commitment to bolstering the lives of students and families, while a meal was enjoyed by all before the children set off on their shopping adventure.
