On the heels of a recent act of arson, suspect Keith Gensamer has been apprehended and is facing multiple felony charges. According to a press release from the Lake Havasu City government, Gensamer was arrested near Lake Havasu City on November 30 after a coordinated operation by local law enforcement. Deputies from the Mohave County Sheriff's Office, in conjunction with the Bureau of Land Management and SWAT Teams from both the sheriff’s office and the Lake Havasu City Police Department, located and surveilled Gensamer’s trailer before taking him into custody without incident.
Following his arrest, an interview with Gensamer revealed he was the individual responsible for setting ablaze the Calvary Church. Gensamer admitted to breaking into the church, dispersing gasoline, and igniting a fire, as detailed in a statement by the Lake Havasu City authorities. Although the act of arson was deliberate, the investigation found it to not have been a targeted attack against the specific church or a group of religious faith. No evidence linked Gensamer to any hate groups.
What emerged from Gensamer's confession was a troubled attempt to draw attention to personal issues. "Gensamer stated that his intent was to provoke a police response that would result in his death, but after igniting the fire, he became frightened and fled the area," officials relayed in a report shared by the Lake Havasu City. The misguided call for help has instead culminated in charging him with Arson of a Structure, Aggravated Criminal Damage to a Religious Structure, Burglary, Misconduct Involving Weapons, and Engaging in an Act of Terrorism.
Gensamer's initial court appearance resulted in a bond set at $1,000,000 cash. He currently resides in the Mohave County Sheriff’s Detention Center, awaiting legal proceedings. Given the gravity of the situation and the charges arrayed against him, the incident reinforces the often complex underlying issues in acts of violence and the need for social safety nets to address personal crises before they escalate to criminal acts.
