Sanje Sedera, a prominent community member, urged a local assembly at the Nevada Buddhist Temple to join forces in helping those displaced, stating, "We have lost hundreds of lives there. Thousands are missing. Hundreds of thousands of families are displaced," a sentiment that resonates with those who have witnessed the impact of this tragedy on the entirety of their homeland, as noted by FOX5 Vegas.
The devastation extends to the disruption of basic necessities, as reported by 8 News Now. Infrastructure has been decimated, leaving many homes underwater, without power, and residents isolated as damaged roads and demolished bridges obstruct access to relief. "They don’t have food and any supply lines cannot reach to the infrastructure," Bhante Punna, the resident monk at the Nevada Buddhist Temple, detailed the harrowing conditions faced by his family during a Sunday vigil.
The incident has prompted an urgent grassroots fundraising effort, which Sanje Sedera believes will garner support from the historically generous Las Vegas community. "As Sri Lankans abroad, we cannot sit by while our families and countrymen face this unimaginable devastation," and "If global aid is delayed, then it is our responsibility—out of love, duty, and humanity—to act with urgency," Sedera expressed during the vigil, as mentioned by FOX5 Vegas.
