The Hawaiʻi Police Department announced that Lieutenant Pernell Hanoa has been promoted to captain, effective Dec. 16, 2025. Hanoa, with 20 years in the department, will lead the Kaʻū District, according to the Hawaiʻi Police Department official statement.
Hanoa began his career with the Kona Patrol and rose through the ranks, serving as a sergeant in the Kaʻū District and later as a detective in the Area II Criminal Investigation Section. Promoted to lieutenant in 2021, he worked in the Area II Juvenile Aid Section before serving as Kaʻū Patrol lieutenant in 2022, often acting as captain when needed.
Interim Police Chief Reed Mahuna praised Hanoa's expertise and leadership. "Captain Hanoa brings a deep understanding of Kaʻū’s geography, challenges, and people," Mahuna said. "His experience working this vast district over many years, combined with his steady leadership and practical approach to problem-solving, make him exceptionally well suited to lead Kaʻū moving forward. I have full confidence in his ability to support both our officers and the communities they serve." The statement underscores the Hawaiʻi Police Department's recognition of Hanoa’s dedication.
