As Los Angeles residents prepare to welcome the New Year, they must also brace for potential weather-related challenges. The National Weather Service (NWS) has issued a flood watch for the Los Angeles area effective from December 31 at 10:00 PM PST through January 1 at 10:00 PM PST. Conditions could prove hazardous as the watch warns that "flooding caused by excessive rainfall continues to be possible."

According to the extended forecast provided by the NWS, rainfall is expected to start today after 10am with new precipitation amounts between a quarter and half of an inch possible. The chance of precipitation climbs to 100% tonight, with rainfall amounts between three quarters and one inch expected. Challenges may extend well into the first week of January, with rain chances persisting nearly every day and total rainfall that could lead to significant hydrologic impacts.

Potential impacts highlighted in the flood watch include the risk of rock and mudslides in canyons and possible debris flows near recent burn scars. The NWS warns, "Excessive runoff may result in flooding of rivers, creeks, streams, and other low-lying and flood-prone locations. Flooding may occur in poor drainage and urban areas. Low-water crossings may be flooded." These conditions necessitate that residents in flood-prone areas remain vigilant and prepared to act quickly should flooding develop.

Specific areas under the watch stretch from Santa Clarita Valley to the eastern ranges of the Santa Monica Mountains and beyond, comprehensively encompassing coastal, inland, and mountainous regions. The advisory lists locations including Ventura, Santa Barbara, and significant parts of Los Angeles County. As the watch remains in effect, local communities are urged to monitor weather forecasts and heed warnings. "Those living in areas prone to flooding should be prepared to take action should flooding develop," cited the NWS flood watch notice.
