San Francisco's District Attorney Brooke Jenkins announced the arrest of 36-year-old Mitchell Hoyt, who has been charged in relation to an arson that damaged the San Francisco Hillel building. As reported by the San Francisco District Attorney's Office, Hoyt was arraigned yesterday afternoon at the Hall of Justice. The prosecution is seeking to deny bail, citing Hoyt as a risk to public safety.
The charges against Hoyt include arson of a structure, with an additional allegation due to a prior strike conviction. This follows an incident on December 5, where the San Francisco Police and Fire Departments responded to a reported fire at the Jewish student center. The personnel found the blaze had begun outside, where recyclables and trash are stored, and then spread to the building, causing around $20,000 worth of damage. Importantly, students were present at Hillel House at the time of the fire.
Through surveillance footage, investigators identified Hoyt as a suspect. Despite the context of the incident – a blaze at a Jewish center – hate crime charges have not been pursued. The District Attorney’s Office has clarified that, based on the evidence they have, there isn't enough to suggest that the act was specifically aimed at Jewish students.
While charges have been set, the investigation remains ongoing. Officials are still sifting through evidence and encourage anyone with information to contact the San Francisco Police Department Tip Line.
