A deputy-involved shooting incident occurred near the Imperial Beach Pier yesterday afternoon, according to a press release issued by the San Diego Police Department. At around 1:38 p.m., two officers from the San Diego County Sheriff's Department were in contact with an individual who suddenly produced a knife and appeared to seek confrontation with law enforcement. The official report states that the man advanced toward the deputies with the weapon in hand, which led to one of the deputies firing multiple shots. Tragically, the man succumbed to his injuries after being taken to a hospital.
The identity of the man has not been released, as authorities are in the process of notifying his family. The San Diego Police Homicide Unit has now taken over the investigation, adhering to the standard protocol established for officer-involved shootings. Investigations of this nature are notably extensive, and the review process is similarly rigorous. In the end, it will be the San Diego County District Attorney's Office's duty to determine if there is any criminal liability on the part of the deputy in question.
In addition to local reviews, the scene has also drawn the attention of federal agencies. Both the Federal Bureau of Investigation and the United States Attorney’s Office will monitor the ongoing investigation of the shooting, ensuring the incident receives a multifaceted examination. This comes as the Sheriff’s Office also commences its own administrative probe into the deputy's use of their service weapon during the encounter.
Law enforcement is requesting assistance from the public in gathering more information regarding this event. They are asking anyone with relevant details to contact the Homicide Unit at (619) 531-2293 or Crime Stoppers at (888) 580-8477.
