A man was hospitalized, and another is in police custody following an officer-involved shooting that unfolded in west Baltimore last night, as per FOX Baltimore. Officials reported that at approximately 8:15 p.m., Eastern District officers, responding to a narcotics call, attempted to stop a vehicle near 21st and Charles Street. The encounter escalated when the vehicle fled, leading the police on a chase that ended at a dead-end alley on the 1300 block of Division Street.
The situation further deteriorated when the vehicle attempted to reverse and "drive towards the officers," authorities explained, according to FOX Baltimore news. In response, multiple officers discharged their firearms at the vehicle, striking a 37-year-old man. The injured driver was then provided aid by the police and is currently listed in stable condition at a local hospital. The passenger, who was unharmed during the ordeal, is now in police custody. The Baltimore City Fraternal Order of Police Lodge 3 has confirmed in a statement that no officers were injured in the incident.
On the other hand, WMAR-2 News provides additional details from Deputy Commissioner Kevin Jones, who indicated that the police's action was a direct consequence of the suspect vehicle attempting to charge at the officers following the chase. Meanwhile, Mayor Brandon Scott, during a press conference Tuesday night, addressed the incident saying, "This unfortunate event is the result of someone trying to run over police officers after police officers were doing their job." Mayor Scott added that the Mayor's Office of Neighborhood Safety and Engagement (MONSE) would assist the affected community.
The incident is currently under investigation, and the shooting highlights a continuous theme of the perils police officers encounter during their duty and the consequences when encounters with alleged criminals escalate beyond control. Details on the condition of the hospitalized man, the charges against the passenger, or further information on the narcotics investigation that precipitated the chase have not been released at this time.
