According to FOX13 News, the incident happened at the intersection of US-92 and Schalamar Creek Drive as the driver of a black Club Car electric golf cart attempted to cross the highway and was hit by a Buick sedan.
The impact of the collision sent the golf cart approximately 50 feet across the road, and the golf cart driver, who was not wearing a seatbelt, was ejected onto the roadway. The Buick passenger sustained minor injuries and was hospitalized, while the golf cart driver was pronounced dead at the scene. The Polk County Traffic Homicide Unit is investigating the crash, with preliminary findings indicating that the Buick driver was not impaired or speeding at the time.
Further details from WFLA indicate that the golf cart driver, a resident of the Schalamar Creek subdivision, was returning from a nearby store when the crash occurred. Several alcoholic beverage containers were found inside the golf cart, although there is no confirmation that impairment played a role in the accident.
