A fire in Inwood has claimed the life of a man this past Saturday after engulfing an apartment building in the Manhattan neighborhood. The blaze started at approximately 7:15 pm in a building located on Sherman Avenue, between West 204th Street and West 207th Street, leading area residents into a frenzy of emergency activity. ABC7 New York reports that the fire originated on the fifth floor of the six-story brick structure.
Smoke poured out from the fiery grasp of the building as firefighters battled the blaze, footage captured on Citizen App revealed, displaying their arduous task using an aerial ladder to contain the fire. As reported by CBS News, the firefighters managed to get the fire under control in about an hour's time. CBS News noted that the incident saw more than 70 fire and EMS personnel converging on the scene to provide assistance.
In the aftermath of the fire, a 66-year-old man was transported to New York Presbyterian Hospital in a critical state, where he succumbed to his injuries. The identity of the deceased has not been disclosed as the community starts to mourn and seek answers to the fatal event. Responding agencies have not yet provided additional details.
