As Christmas approaches, Maricopa County Animal Care and Control (MCACC) is calling out for residents to consider an addition to their family that might just bark. Nearly 600 dogs are waiting for forever homes in the county's shelters, a stark reminder of the abundance of pets in need during the holiday season. "We have about 600 dogs right now between our three shelter locations," Kim Powell, communications supervisor for MCACC, stated as reported by FOX 10 Phoenix. Powell painted a picture of an ongoing influx, with around 50 to 60 lost pets being found every day.
Despite the seasonal warmth and cheer, the shelter environment cannot match the comfort and connection found in a permanent home. Powell told FOX 10 that while they are making an effort to find homes for as many dogs as possible during the holidays, potential adopters should consider the decision deeply: "Just make sure that you're not only getting it just because it's for holidays." She emphasized that adoption is a lifetime commitment that should involve all members of the household.
Earlier this year, on August 23, MCACC hosted a free adoption event that offered a glimmer of hope for many four-legged companions. By waiving adoption fees, an impressive 197 dogs and puppies found new homes, easing some of the shelter's capacity strains. "We had an incredible turnout and are very grateful for the community choosing to adopt," Powell confirmed as AZFamily reported.
Looking ahead, the formation of a new nonprofit, Friends of Animal Care and Control, is likely to funnel additional resources into community programs that are not covered by the shelter's principal budget. These initiatives will include services such as spay and neuter, microchipping, and vaccine events. As detailed by Powell in an interview with FOX 10, the aim is to prevent dogs from ever needing to enter the shelter. "We want this place empty," she said, expressing the desire to reserve space for only those dogs that are truly in need.
