Masked burglars slammed a white SUV through the front of a Logan Square shoe store before dawn Monday, grabbed merchandise, and disappeared in a two-car getaway, leaving behind a shredded storefront and rattled neighbors.
The crash-and-grab hit a shop in the 3400 block of West Diversey Avenue at the busy six-way intersection with Milwaukee and Kimball, police said. Officers swept through the store after the break-in but found no one inside.
Police Probe 2:56 A.M. Smash-In
According to CBS Chicago, officers were called at 2:56 a.m., when the suspects used a white sport-utility vehicle to punch straight through the storefront. They then grabbed miscellaneous merchandise and took off in two separate vehicles.
Grand Central Area detectives are handling the case, and as of Monday morning, no arrests had been made, the station reported. Investigators are working to collect surveillance footage and track down witnesses from nearby businesses while they follow the route the crew used to get away.
Smash-and-Grabs Keep Hitting Diversey
The break-in is the latest hit along the Diversey Avenue commercial strip, which has seen other overnight burglaries in recent years. A January burglary at a Logan Square coffee shop was caught on camera, ABC7 Chicago reported, showing how quickly crews can move when the streets are quiet and security gates are the only line of defense.
Shop owners say the pattern is brutal. Each crash means another boarded-up window, another insurance call, and another hit to customer confidence along a stretch that relies on steady foot traffic.
Crash-and-Grab Crews Using the Same Playbook Citywide
Across Chicago, crews have been using a similar playbook, ramming SUVs or pickup trucks into storefronts, then quickly loading merchandise into multiple waiting vehicles. The tactic, local reporting shows, makes it harder for officers to respond in time and complicates the trail of evidence.
CWBChicago has documented earlier cases that mirror what happened in Logan Square, with shattered glass, mangled frames, and small retailers stuck with painful repair bills. Some owners say repeat hits could be enough to push them out of business.
Logan Square Shopkeepers Say They Are Running Out of Patience
Merchants in Logan Square have told reporters they feel exposed after a string of overnight burglaries and robberies, and they have been pressing for more overnight patrols and faster detective follow-up.
Block Club Chicago reported last year that business owners asked city officials to help with security upgrades and grants to cover repairs, warning that their patience is wearing thin. Aldermen have floated training sessions and grant programs, but store owners say they need visible deterrents right now, not just long-term plans.
How Neighbors Can Help Investigators
Police are urging anyone who was in the area or has security video of the break-in to contact Grand Central Area detectives or submit an anonymous tip online. Recent Chicago police alerts and news reports direct tipsters to CPDTIP.com, the department’s confidential tip portal.
