A large fire broke out on Monday night at an apartment complex in northwest Houston, forcing many families to evacuate. The Houston Fire Department received a call around 9 p.m. to the 200 block of Plaza Verde Drive and found heavy smoke, as reported by Click2Houston. The fire escalated to a three-alarm blaze, and strong winds made it difficult to control, destroying at least 18 units in the building.
A Houston firefighter fell through the floor while clearing a unit, prompting a mayday call, though Senior Capt. Raul Reyes confirmed, "The firefighter was quickly extricated he was free he was not injured he was already checked out he wasn’t injured but a three-alarm company was still coming they still needed the manpower because this was actually a pretty massive fire here," according KHOU. The fire continued into the early hours of Tuesday, fueled by persistent winds, with crews battling flare-ups for more than eight hours.
The Red Cross assisted displaced families as the HFD’s arson investigators examined the fire’s origins and spread. "Everyone affected has been accounted for," and no injuries or fatalities were reported among residents or emergency personnel.
