Starting the new year with a focus on sustainability, the County of Maui will introduce four all-electric transit buses to its public transportation fleet on the week of January 5, 2026, following driver training. These buses will initially serve the Kahului Loop #5 and Upcountry Islander #40 routes before expanding to other routes, according to the County of Maui.
County Transportation Director Marc Takamori said, "These zero-emission buses represent a major milepost in the County of Maui’s efforts to reduce local air pollution and modernize the Maui Bus fleet with quieter, cleaner technology." The upgrades are supported through partnerships with the Hawai’i Department of Transportation, the Federal Transit Administration, and funding from the Hawai’i State Energy Office, as reported by the County of Maui.
Last month, a ceremonial blessing of new buses was held at the Velma McWayne Santos Community Center in Wailuku. Passengers can track the buses in real-time and check arrival times through the Maui Bus app or the service’s website. For more information, residents can contact the County Department of Transportation, as stated by the County of Maui.
