The Maui Police Department has warned the public about phone scammers posing as officers. Maui Police Department said the callers use fake caller ID information to make residents believe they are in legal trouble.

According to MPD’s Facebook page, scammers claim victims have an outstanding warrant or missed jury duty, using spoofed calls that appear to come from the police. Victims are pressured to make immediate payments via cryptocurrency, apps, gift cards, or credit cards.

The MPD reminded the public that law enforcement will never request payment or personal financial information over the phone. Residents are advised to avoid sharing personal information and to verify suspicious calls through official channels.

The MPD urges anyone who has shared personal information or sent money to report it at 808-244-6400.
