The Powerball jackpot continues to escalate with no winners stepping forward from last Saturday's drawing, yet a Miami resident did manage to secure a $1 million prize. WFLA News reported that the million-dollar ticket was purchased at a Publix located at 9755 NW 41st Street in Miami. This marks yet another high-tier win for the state of Florida, with a Clearwater player also having purchased a million-dollar ticket at a local Publix the previous weekend.
The staggering jackpot, which has reached an estimated $1.6 billion after months without a winner, is set to be the fourth-largest in the history of the Powerball game. The cash option available to any potential winner stands at approximately $735.3 million before taxes. According to WFLA, a winner today can choose to slowly receive an annuitized prize spread over 30 years, or to take the substantial lump sum payment.
Reinforcing the stroke of luck experienced by Florida players, Local 10 News added that another Doral resident also snagged a $1 million second-tier prize from a ticket bought at the same Publix location within the Doral Plaza shopping center. Despite these significant wins, the ultimate jackpot has eluded players thus far, causing the prize to roll over to today's Powerball drawing.
Floridians who play the lottery have an added benefit, as the state does not impose an income tax, meaning winners such as these are only subjected to the 24% federal tax on their winnings. The next chance for lottery participants to potentially win big will be during today's drawing, which, according to Local 10 News, is set to take place at 10:59 p.m.
