As Miami-Dade approaches the New Year's Eve festivities, residents are being cautioned by law enforcement officials about the dangers of celebratory gunfire. Miami-Dade Sheriff Rosie Cordero-Stutz underscored the potential consequences of firing guns into the air during holiday celebrations, stating, "Celebratory gunfire on New Year’s Eve," according to a WSVN report. The urgency of the message comes not only from safety concerns but also from a tragic event last year where 10-year-old Yaneliz Munguia was fatally struck by a stray bullet.
In an effort to prevent another tragedy, Sheriff Cordero-Stutz has called for heightened vigilance and for the community to swiftly report any incidents of gunfire. "If at all possible, get under cover. ‘Cause that’s a first, what goes up must come down," Cordero-Stutz told WSVN. "If you see or hear someone firing into the air, call us. Dial 911. Do not wait, do not assume someone else is going to report it. Lives are at stake." The dangers of celebratory shots, which can travel up to three miles and cross city and county lines, are being taken seriously with increased patrols and the deployment of technology to detect and rapidly respond to gunfire.
Authorities are not just asking for community involvement; they are also warning of the legal consequences for those who choose to dangerously discharge weapons in public. "It is a crime to discharge a weapon in public. It obviously will matter, the situation, the totality of the situation, how it occurs, but they can be facing anything from fines to time in jail," Sheriff Cordero-Stutz emphasized in the WSVN interview. Issues highlighted include the potential for bullets to cause property damage, such as piercing roofs and shattering windows, in addition to causing bodily harm or even death.
Backing the sheriff's message, police chiefs from across the county have joined the efforts to raise awareness of the risks. According to a Local10 report, "We will have high-visibility patrols, we will use all available technology to detect gunfire and respond immediately and we will track and arrest anyone who chooses to endanger this community."
