Midday gunfire on a busy stretch of West Camp Wisdom Road left a 42-year-old man dead yesterday, rattling the Red Bird neighborhood and putting a 21-year-old in handcuffs on a murder charge.
Dallas police say they were called around 1:10 p.m. to the 4000 block of West Camp Wisdom Road in southeast Dallas. Officers arrived to find 42-year-old Billy Brightman with apparent gunshot wounds. Dallas Fire-Rescue responded and pronounced him dead at the scene.
Investigators identified 21-year-old Marlon Lawrence at the location and took him into custody. He has since been arrested and charged with murder in connection with the shooting.
Police say
According to the Dallas Police Department, the case is being investigated under number 172129-2025, and Dallas Fire-Rescue also responded to the scene.
The department lists Detective C. Fehrenbach as the point of contact. Anyone with information is asked to call (214) 671-3671 or email [email protected].
Police have not released a possible motive, and investigators say the case remains active.
Scene and neighborhood context
The shooting took place in the Red Bird area along the Camp Wisdom corridor, a stretch that has seen multiple deadly incidents in recent years. Reporting from The Dallas Morning News has documented earlier investigations in the 4000 block and highlighted the city’s broader efforts to reduce murders by targeting hot spots.
Officials have said those focused interventions helped bring down Dallas’ murder count last year, even as individual homicides continue to hit neighborhoods across the city.
Legal status
Law enforcement officials say Lawrence was arrested and charged with murder. Those are allegations, and he is presumed innocent unless and until he is proven guilty in court.
The case will be reviewed by the Dallas County District Attorney’s Office. Detectives are continuing to seek witnesses and additional evidence as the investigation moves forward.
