The establishment first grappled with a break-in at their Third Ward location, where burglars made an early morning entrance on Saturday. According to FOX26 Houston, surveillance footage captured two individuals using flashlights and tools to gain entry through a smashed window, proceeding to ransack the office and remove a safe.
Co-owners Craig Joseph and Jeanelle Williams declared the financial loss from the safe to be less than the cost to replace the door damaged during the break-in. Despite the setback, the community rallied around Mikki's Café, showing strong support over the weekend. The specifics of the burglary remain unclear, as further details have not been disclosed.
Merely days earlier, a second Mikki's Café location on West Bellfort confronted its own ordeal as a driver, reportedly fallen asleep at the wheel, crashed through the front of the building on Thursday afternoon. Both incidents were captured on surveillance, with a report from Click2Houston showing customers narrowly avoiding harm in the car crash. The driver, according to co-owner Janelle Williams in a statement obtained by Click2Houston, was dealing with personal issues and accidentally pressed the accelerator instead of reverse.
The break-in resulted in damages and theft which the owners described as being relatively small compared to the inconvenience caused. Despite the challenges, Mikki's Café continued to serve customers with determination and without interruption. "But we were built for this," Joseph told Click2Houston, expressing reliance on faith and the spirit of resilience inspired by their late mother's legacy.
