Minnesota farmers face a dual challenge of avian influenza and extreme weather, but new grant opportunities announced by Senators Aric Putnam and Rob Kupec of the DFL party aim to ease these burdens. Detailed by the Senate DFL website, the Agricultural Growth Research and Innovation (AGRI) grants propose to aid farmers in bolstering biosecurity against diseases and enhancing resilience to climatic volatility.

The AGRI Protect Grant specifically addresses the threat of avian influenza, offering up to $10,000 for livestock producers to invest in equipment that enhances biosecurity on their farms. Despite facing a massive threat from Avian Influenza, Minnesota's turkey farms, mostly family-owned, can benefit from these grants, according to Chair Putnam, who emphasized the importance of preparing farms to thrive for the foreseeable future. As stated on the Senate DFL website, "These grants are incredible resources to help Minnesota farmers make important upgrades and updates to their farms that will help them thrive for years to come." This funding pool might award a cumulative total of up to $500,000 through a competitive review process.

Vice-Chair Kupec draws attention to the role of Minnesota farmers as the front lines in their combat against the effects of a rapidly shifting climate and increasingly severe weather. These realities necessitate resources and support, which the AGRI Prepare Grant strives to provide. This grant provides up to $10,000 to livestock and specialty crop producers for obtaining supplies and equipment that aid in weathering the extreme conditions of drought, flooding, hail, and severe storms. Praising the grants' objectives, Kupec stated, "As more extreme weather becomes the norm, resources are available to help farmers make critical upgrades and investments to help their farms, operations, and equipment become more resilient," as per the Senate DFL. The MDA may also allocate up to $500,000 in total for these resilience-building efforts through a similar review process.

Those interested in either of these grants should mark their calendars. Applications are due by 4 p.m. on Thursday, Jan. 15, 2026. Strategically distributed by the MDA's AGRI Program, the grants are intended to advance Minnesota's agricultural and renewable energy sectors, and the complete eligibility requirements, along with application details, can be found on the AGRI Protect Grant and AGRI Prepare Grant webpages.
