The Mint Hill Police Department recently celebrated an outstanding member of their force, the 2024 Employee of the Year, Officer Austin Smith. The department took to social media to commend Officer Smith, who has been a part of the team for almost three years, for his exceptional service and commitment to the community of Mint Hill.
Officer Smith has also been handling his four-legged partner, Bodi, as a K9 handler for nearly a year and a half. "He grew up in Union County and always knew he wanted to become a police officer “to arrest bad guys,” the Mint Hill Police Department shared through their Facebook page. It's clear that Smith has made his mark through his natural leadership, and his skillset, which includes a brown belt in jiu-jitsu, only bolsters his credentials.
The Mint Hill Police Department highlights Smith's eagerness to step in wherever he can. He is often seen assisting, mentoring, and offering support to newer officers, a quality that has not gone unnoticed by his peers and superiors. Describing his influence within the department, Mint Hill PD stated, “From the start of his career, Officer Smith had 'it'—that natural drive, instinct, and leadership." His presence is clearly felt beyond the precinct as well; Officer Smith, along with Bodi, is a familiar face in the community, ready to engage in local events such as the upcoming Mint Hill Christmas Parade.
