Officials emphasize that "Impaired drivers put others on the road at significant risk," noting that impairment can come from alcohol, prescription drugs, or marijuana, as stated by the Modesto Police Department.
Even with legal marijuana in California, driving under its influence remains illegal. According to the Modesto Police Department on their Facebook page, a first-time DUI can cost around $13,500 in fines and penalties, including a license suspension, to discourage impaired driving.
