As the holiday season approaches, Montgomery County Department of Transportation (MCDOT) has announced changes to its transportation services for the convenience of residents and visitors. According to a press release, these adjustments will accommodate the altered travel patterns during the winter holidays. Christmas Eve and New Year's Eve will see services like Ride On, extRa, and Flex operating on modified weekday schedules until 10 p.m., while on Christmas Day and New Year’s Day, the transportation network shifts to a Sunday schedule with certain services not in operation.
Specifically, holiday travelers can expect the county and MCDOT offices to maintain regular hours on Christmas Eve, with Ride On and extRa buses following a weekday schedule until the evening. Parking rates and regulations at public garages, lots, and curb meters will remain unchanged. On the other hand, Christmas Day brings a shutdown to county offices, with services like the Ride On extRa 101 and Flex not in service and free parking throughout the county.
Moving towards the new year, regular schedules resume for the Ride On buses and Metro services on New Year's Eve, with extended Metrorail hours until 2 a.m. to accommodate late-night festivities. MCDOT ensures that travelers will have accessible transportation options to safely ring in 2025. Details about the transportation schedules, including for the TRiPS Commuter Store and the MARC Train, can be found within the department's announcement.
MCDOT has a tradition of tailoring transit operations during significant holidays to support altered commuting patterns that emerge as people take time off to celebrate or travel. The use of a Sunday schedule on New Year’s Day, January 1, provides a reduced service that mirrors the expected lull as the public takes a breather from the usual hustle. On all holidays, Metrorail and Metrobus will adapt to the downtime with schedules that reflect the lesser demand for transit services, as detailed by the county's announcement.
