At the Committee for Montgomery's annual Legislative Breakfast, Montgomery County Council President Natali Fani-González took the platform to set forth an ambitious plan for the coming legislative year. Among the highlights of her address was the Trust Act, aimed squarely at bolstering protections for immigrant communities in Montgomery County. According to the Montgomery County official press release, Fani-González stated, "When we say that we want to welcome immigrant communities, we need to mean it."
Fani-González went on to make a direct link between the Trust Act and public safety, emphasizing community comfort with law enforcement as a priority. "Everyone should feel safe in this County," she asserted, and this was reflected by unanimous co-lead sponsorship from her council colleagues and support from County Executive Elrich and Police Chief Marc Yamada. The Act proposes to fundamentally alter the engagement between Montgomery County and federal immigration agencies, with Senator Will Smith set to try and end the 287(g) program statewide, as reported by the Montgomery County.
The Council President also pinpointed dire needs within the county police infrastructure, advocating for redevelopment of the Glenmont police station in her district, which she described as "one of the oldest and most disgraceful." Fani-González appraised the situation firmly stating, "If we say that we want to embrace public safety, we need to make sure that our police officers are working in safe and high-quality facilities," as stated by the Montgomery County.
Education, a cornerstone of her address, saw Fani-González calling out for accountability and transparency within Montgomery County Public Schools. Speaking "from the heart as a mom and Montgomery County Public Schools parent," she demanded a standard of safety and excellence across all schools in the county. "We deserve accountability for each one of the schools," Fani-González said to emphasize the disparities in educational outcomes amongst the diverse neighborhoods, as noted by the Montgomery County.
The speech rounded off with a piercing take on the cost of living crisis in Montgomery County. Fani-González underscored the urgent need to seriously address housing affordability to prevent the exodus of young families, by stating, "They cannot afford to live here." By pointing to housing density and childcare as pressing issues, she paved the way for her administration's proactive stance on tackling such crises. She closed her remarks on a note of commitment to the county, reminding listeners of the duties elected officials bear: "Confronting crises – that is our job."
