Nevada County Treasurer and Tax Collector, Michelle Bodley, is urging locals to get their payments in by 5 p.m. to avoid a late penalty. Payments that arrive post December 10, without a Dec. 10 postmark will see a 10% penalty slapped on for tardiness, as reported by the county's official website.
There's still a handful of ways to submit your payment on time. For those who trust their internet connection more than the postal service, the tax collector's website offers the option to print a copy of your bill and pay online. This can be done before the witching hour of 11:59 p.m. on Dec. 10. It's worth noting that there is a 2.38% fee for credit/debit card payments, however, e-checks don't carry an extra charge. The drive-up drop box outside the Rood Government Center remains another choice for the physically present but wary of lines.
For individuals leaning towards a face-to-face transaction, remember that the Tax Collector's Office takes payments in-person at their 950 Maidu Avenue Suite 290 location in Nevada City. They're open Monday through Friday, 8 a.m. to 5 p.m., excluding legal holidays. As Bodley's office warns, the lines can get daunting on deadline day, so showing up early could spare taxpayers some stress.
Lastly, for those residing in Truckee, a drop box is available at the Truckee Town Hall where payments will be collected until the 5 p.m. cutoff on Dec. 10. The caveat with mailing is, if you're cutting it close to the deadline, be certain to secure a hand stamped timely postmark or risk, a penalty thanks to a tardy postmark. Payments should be mailed along with the payment stub to P.O. Box 128, Nevada City, CA 95959-0128.
