Heads up, drivers—change is afoot on the H-1 freeway. The Hawaiʻi Department of Transportation (HDOT) is tweaking its weekend closure schedule for the Salt Lake Rehabilitation Project. If you're cruising eastbound between the Kaimakani Street overpass and the Pearl Harbor/Nimitz off-ramp, expect to hit the brakes a bit earlier. Instead of your typical weekend slowdown, crews will now start barricading three right lanes at 6:30 p.m. on Fridays, lasting until the new week dawns at 4 a.m. on Mondays.
But hold onto your steering wheels—on the weekends of Dec. 12 and Dec. 19, the HDOT plans to take it up a notch. An additional lane will shut down during select hours, making the trek even tighter through the work zone. During these specific times, from 7 p.m. Friday to 4:30 a.m. Saturday, and then from 7 p.m. Saturday to 7 a.m. Sunday, you'll be down to one lonely lane. According to HDOT, these measures are essential for the crew to get in and work on that third lane from the right.
In case you're wondering, there's indeed more than just lane closures on HDOT's to-do list. The remaining tasks for wrapping up the H-1 Salt Lake Rehabilitation stretch from eastbound reconstruction and repaving to guardrail upgrades. Also on the agenda: new signs, rumble strip installation, and that crucial final striping on both carriageways. While finalizing these vibrant lines is still on standby mode, waiting for crew availability, the HDOT promises updates as soon as they set their schedule in stone.
