Hawaii is launching a new training program in Spring 2026 to teach basic on-set safety skills for creative industry jobs. The initiative, supported by Good Jobs Hawaii and the state’s Creative Industries Division, aims to help participants gain the skills needed for unionized production work.
According to the Hawaii DBEDT, the University of Hawaii Community Colleges will offer Level 1 training starting January 12, 2026, with registration open until December 19, 2025. The program teaches safe use of equipment like scaffolding and aerial lifts and provides certifications to help participants qualify for higher-paying union production jobs.
DBEDT Director James Kunane Tokioka highlighted the importance of certifications for accessing high-paying union jobs in the creative industries. Good Jobs Hawaii will guide applicants through the process, providing training and resources that can lead to job opportunities.
Details revealed by DBEDT outline the Level 1 curriculum as entailing 72 instructional hours across five courses, which include Scaffolding Erection and OSHA 10 certification. After completing the bundle, students are to quickly set up an interview with a local entertainment industry partner. Should they be hired, union membership in the International Alliance of Theatrical Stage Employees follows suit after 30 days, and those employed will be financially supported to progress to Level 2 training.
The initiative by Good Jobs Hawaii and DBEDT aims to strengthen Hawaii's creative economy. Interested residents can enroll through the Good Jobs Hawaii website, with tuition support for eligible candidates. Since 2023, over 6,000 Hawai‘i residents have joined specialized training programs in creative industries, education, technology, skilled trades, and healthcare, helping the state expand opportunities for its workforce.
