The tragic death of 19-year-old Jaylah Donald and her unborn son in a crash with a suspected DUI driver has left the Newton County community in Georgia in profound grief. The fatal accident occurred just after midnight last Friday, according to Atlanta News First. Donald was seven months pregnant and had recently shared the news that she was soon to step into the role of motherhood.
As the family was returning from a Thanksgiving celebration, the vehicle, driven improperly backing onto Fairview Road by Jaylah's mother Takila, was struck on the passenger side. Genette Anderson, Jaylah's grandmother, heartbreakingly recounted to Atlanta News First, "When I first got up there, I couldn’t breathe, for one thing." In the same tragic night, Takila was severely injured and life-flighted to Grady Memorial Hospital.
During the crash, another vehicle, whose driver was suspected of DUI, collided with the car carrying Jaylah. A FOX 5 Atlanta report states that both drivers are facing charges connected to the incident. In an effort to support the grieving family, a GoFundMe was created to assist with funeral expenses and to establish memorials. "This tragedy was unexpected and devastating, leaving our family emotionally broken and financially unprepared," says the fundraiser's description.
Statistics highlight the severity of drunk-driving during holiday festivities. The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration reports that between 2019 and 2023, more than one-third of all traffic crash fatalities during Thanksgiving were DUI-related, as Atlanta News First stated. Adding to the somber statistics, FOX 5 Atlanta reported that over the same holiday weekend, the Georgia State Patrol issued 225 DUI citations, with three fatalities and more than 115 injuries stemming from crashes.
The loss of Jaylah and her unborn child has sparked a strong reaction in the community with over 50 people gathering to release purple balloons into the sky, honoring their memories.
