Leonardo Paramo-Barbas, a 29-year-old Nicaraguan national, was handed down a sentence for the misuse of a Social Security number, a charge he previously admitted to. In an announcement from Acting United States Attorney Michael M. Simpson reported on December 19, the sentence was rendered by District Judge Sarah S. Vance on December 4. Paramo-Barbas was sentenced to time already served and was also ordered to pay a $100 mandatory special assessment fee, according to the U.S. Attorney’s Office.
Details of the case, published by the U.S. Attorney’s Office for the Eastern District for Louisiana, explain that Paramo-Barbas misrepresented a Social Security number as being assigned to him "for the purpose of obtaining and maintaining employment, knowingly, willfully, and with intent to deceive," back on July 20, 2022. Such offenses, while seemingly singular in nature, often underscore broader issues related to illegal immigration and employment fraud.
The U.S. Attorney's Office detailed that this conviction is a part of "Operation Take Back America," a nationwide DOJ initiative aimed at halting illegal immigration, dismantling cartels, and mitigating violent crime. The larger strategy involves marshaling extensive resources from the Department of Justice, targeting those involved in such transnational illegalities.
According to Simpson's statement, the work of ICE Enforcement Removal Office and Homeland Security Investigations was instrumental in Paramo-Barbas's prosecution. The case fell under the purview of Assistant United States Attorney Mary Katherine Kaufman from the General Crimes Unit, who led the legal proceedings against Paramo-Barbas, as per the U.S. Attorney's Office.
