What started as a mental-health welfare check in Normal Heights yesterday turned into an hours-long police siege and a tragic discovery, after officers found the man who had called for help dead inside his own home on the 4400 block of 40th Street. Streets were shut down for several blocks, neighbors were told to stay put, and a heavy police presence was deployed to secure the area. San Diego police later said on X that no officers were injured.
Police timeline
Officers say the call for a welfare check came in around 3:40 p.m. When three San Diego Police Department officers first approached the home near Monroe Avenue and 40th Street, they heard what they believed was a gunshot and quickly pulled back. According to the Times of San Diego, the situation was then handled as a barricade, with SWAT officers and crisis negotiators brought to the scene.
Police message
Hours later, the San Diego Police Department announced the outcome publicly. On X, the department wrote, "The incident on the 4400 block of 40th Street has concluded. Officers will begin opening traffic as normal after our resources are done clearing the area. The individual inside the residence was found deceased. There is no threat to the public." The San Diego Police Department also stated that no officers were hurt during the incident.
Scene and response
From the ground and the air, the response looked like a full-scale operation. Aerial footage and accounts from neighbors showed an armored vehicle and at least five police cruisers clogging the alley, drones circling overhead, and officers firing pepper balls and other distraction devices. At one point, officers sent in a tactical droid to scope out the interior of the house. As reported by NBC 7 San Diego, the outlet later added an editor's note explaining that police first reported they had been shot at, but later determined the gunshot was self-inflicted.
Authorities say the circumstances surrounding the man’s death remain under investigation, and detectives have not released his name or any additional details, Times of San Diego reports.
