North Carolina election officials are working to keep voter registration records up to date. The State Board of Elections has requested voter information from the Division of Motor Vehicles (NCDMV). Sam Hayes, Executive Director of the State Board, has requested full Social Security numbers from the NCDMV.
This will help election officials match records, find duplicate registrations, and verify voter eligibility. In a press release, Hayes said, "Accurate voter rolls are essential to both voter access and election integrity." The effort may play an important role ahead of the 2026 midterm elections.
The State Board will also work with Homeland Security using the SAVE database to verify citizenship in certain cases. This process is supported by the Help America Vote Act of 2002, which allows election officials to share information with state motor vehicle agencies to keep voter records accurate.
Earlier concerns about non-citizens being inadvertently registered to vote by NCDMV examiners have been addressed by officials. Hayes emphasized the board’s commitment to work securely with the NCDMV, ensuring that all shared data follows legal requirements and protects privacy.
These actions follow standard procedures but show the State Board’s commitment to maintaining accurate voter rolls. The board aims to ensure only eligible voters are registered while minimizing errors and protecting public trust.
