
The state of North Carolina mourns the loss of a key figurehead, as Governor Jim Hunt, who led the state through four terms, has passed away. Current Governor Josh Stein announced an official statement detailing Hunt's contributions and his personal sentiments on the leader's impact and legacy.
In his remembrance, Governor Stein highlighted Jim Hunt’s influence on the state, saying Hunt played a major role in shaping North Carolina’s recent successes. He pointed to initiatives such as Smart Start and the North Carolina Biotechnology Center, noting that Hunt’s administration focused on strengthening education while positioning the state for technological growth. Stein also cited Hunt’s efforts to raise teacher pay and protect air quality, emphasizing the broad scope of Hunt’s impact on North Carolinians.
Hunt’s political career extended beyond his time in the governor’s office, spanning 16 years and leaving a lasting legacy in North Carolina. Serving as the state’s 69th and 71st governor, he was credited with advancing education and environmental reforms. Governor Stein also expressed condolences to Hunt’s family, noting the personal loss of a mentor and friend.
