A pre-dawn chain-reaction crash on the North Freeway left a woman dead early Sunday after deputies say her Honda Fit, already hobbled by a flat tire, was rear-ended and shoved into multiple vehicles.
The wreck was reported around 2:30 a.m. in the 14500 block of the freeway near the Lone Star RV dealership. The impact crumpled the compact car, tipped a Jeep Wrangler onto its side, and shut down lanes for hours as investigators worked the scene.
How the crash unfolded
According to ABC13 Houston, investigators say it started when the Honda Fit got a flat tire and slowed in a main travel lane of the freeway. A Jeep Wrangler then slammed into the back of the disabled Honda, sending the smaller car into a Toyota Camry and a Mercedes-Benz.
The force of the collision pushed the Honda into the other two vehicles, and the Jeep that struck it rolled onto its side, according to the station.
What authorities reported
FOX26 Houston reports that the Honda driver was pronounced dead at the scene.
Harris County Sheriff Ed Gonzalez told reporters the Jeep’s driver is 18 years old, while the drivers of the Camry and Mercedes are both 34. None of the surviving drivers were hurt, and deputies said they found no signs of intoxication among them, according to the outlet.
Investigation and next steps
Investigators with the Harris County Sheriff’s Office Vehicular Crimes Division spent hours processing the scene and continue to probe the circumstances of the crash. Authorities have not yet released the identity of the woman who died.
ABC13 Houston reports that the 18-year-old Jeep driver was allowed to go home and that investigators do not expect to file any charges in connection with the wreck.
Safety reminder for drivers
Breakdowns in active freeway lanes can turn dangerous fast. If your vehicle develops a problem, authorities urge you to move to the shoulder when it is safe and use your hazard lights to alert other drivers.
The investigation remains open, and officials say additional details will be released as they become available.
