The United States Attorney's Office for the Northern District of Ohio has disclosed a series of guilty pleas and a sentencing in immigration violations, part of the broader enforcement efforts under Operation Take Back America. According to the U.S. Attorney's Office, Northern District of Ohio official release, the individuals, whose cases are separate and not related, faced charges ranging from illegal reentry to possession of fraudulent documents.
Among those who have entered guilty pleas, Ruben Luis-Garcia, a 40-year-old Guatemalan citizen, faced justice for his return to the United States without authorization after a previous removal. Sentencing has been scheduled for February 5, 2026, following his October 30, encounter with law enforcement in Sandusky, Erie County. Similarly, Ismael Ruiz-Sebastian of Mexico, aged 34, pleaded guilty to a like offense and is due for sentencing on January 27, 2026, for his own unlawful presence in Sandusky on the same day. Found by the U.S. Border Patrol-Sandusky Bay Station, Erick Ventura-Castellanos, a 35-year-old Honduran national, had re-entered the country illegally, leading to his apprehension on October 29, in Danbury Township, Ottawa County, with sentencing also set for January 27, 2026.
In addition to these cases, Bersain Alvarez-Lopez, 37 and a Mexican citizen, has been sentenced to time served after being charged with illegal reentry as well as possessing fraudulent identification and misusing a social security number. While having been removed from the country on three previous occasions, with the most recent being January 15, 2019, Alvarez-Lopez now remains in federal custody, awaiting deportation.
The indictments leading to these cases were the result of investigations carried out by the U.S. Border Patrol-Sandusky Bay Station, highlighting the continued focus of federal authorities on immigration enforcement in this region. Assistant United States Attorneys Gene Crawford, Tracey Tangeman, and Ava Rotell Dustin are handling the prosecution for these cases. Emphasizing the gravity of these offenses, the USAO's communication articulated that Operation Take Back America aims to "repel the invasion of illegal immigration" and "achieve the total elimination of cartels and transnational criminal organizations," according to the U.S. Attorney's Office, Northern District of Ohio.
