NYC Ferry is launching its new St. George to Bay Ridge route, reestablishing a waterway connection between Staten Island and Brooklyn. Service begins today at 6:05 a.m., restoring a route that was discontinued after the opening of the Verrazzano-Narrows Bridge in 1964. According to SILive, this ferry expansion is part of the New York City Economic Development Corporation’s initiative to improve transportation options for city commuters.

Changes to NYC Ferry routes coincide with recent adjustments to major subway lines that are affecting daily travel in the city. The F and M subway lines have swapped routes, leading NYC Ferry to modify its service. During peak commuting hours, the East River route will operate as two separate routes. Additionally, the Soundview and Rockaway routes have been combined to reduce transfers for riders traveling to destinations such as Midtown and East 90th Street. PIX11 reports that these updates are part of the Ferry Optimization Plan.

With the extension of the St. George route, the ferry will now serve not only western Manhattan but also the American Veterans Memorial Pier in Bay Ridge. From there, it continues to Atlantic Avenue, Brooklyn Bridge Park, and Pier 11 at Wall Street, connecting Staten Island commuters to the wider NYC Ferry network across the East River and other routes. Passengers traveling to destinations such as Governors Island or Astoria can make additional transfers at the Wall Street/Pier 11 stop.

Commuters using the new ferry routes can expect service approximately every 37 minutes during peak hours, with off-peak trips scheduled roughly 50 minutes apart. A single ride costs $4.50, with additional options including a 10-trip ticket for $29 and an unlimited two-day pass for $15. Tickets are available through the NYC Ferry app or at vending machines at ferry terminals. For more information on schedules and routes, passengers can consult terminal maps or visit the NYC Ferry website.
