Ohio Governor Mike DeWine and various state, local, and federal partners convened in Dayton to discuss bolstering efforts against violent crime in the region. A plan was disclosed to funnel additional state support to enhance the initiatives already in place by the Dayton Police Department (DPD), the Ohio State Highway Patrol (OSHP), and their federal counterparts. These new measures are set to be intelligence-driven, focusing on areas in Dayton that data pinpoints as hotbeds for repeat violent offenders. Governor DeWine's office announced that these operations are already in motion and are designed for long-term implementation to keep a check on notorious lawbreakers.
The collaboration now ropes in the Ohio Narcotics Intelligence Center (ONIC), which pairs its criminal intelligence analysts with DPD's Real Time Crime Center to zero in on the most problematic areas. Their goal is to gather intelligence that will lead to the apprehension of dangerous, repeat violent offenders who are elusive. The Ohio Investigative Unit (OIU) is also stepping up its game to enforce Ohio's alcohol laws, where crime rates soar, especially targeting illegal activities on the premises of liquor establishments. The Ohio Adult Parole Authority (APA) is another entity that's upping its ante. It is on the hunt for parolees in Dayton who have dodged supervision and are violating their post-release conditions. In a strategy aligning with other agencies, the APA will intensify surprise visits to former inmates deemed at high risk of relapsing into criminal behavior.
"We are using the combined expertise of state, local, and federal partners to specifically focus in on the repeat violent offenders, who continuously disregard the law and illegally carry guns in the city of Dayton," Governor DeWine said. This statement underscores the unified approach these agencies are taking against the city’s most persistent culprits.
This newly minted support adds to the existing partnership between DPD, OSHP, the Montgomery County Sheriff's Office, and federal agencies like the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms, and Explosives, along with the Federal Bureau of Investigation and the U.S. Marshal's Office. Cases stemming from these joint efforts will see prosecution by the Montgomery County Prosecutor's Office and the U.S. Attorney's Office for the Southern District of Ohio. Reinforcing these initiatives from the skies, OSHP's Aviation Unit will mitigate the need for high-risk traffic pursuits, directing on-ground forces to fleeing suspects and identifying discarded evidence, which often includes illegally possessed firearms.
